BASSETERRE — All passengers and crew aboard the Apple Syder ferry were safely rescued Monday morning after the vessel issued an SOS while en route from St. Kitts to Nevis, prompting a swift emergency response from the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard and civilian fishermen. The circumstances that led to the incident remain under investigation.

The passenger ferry reported distress while crossing the channel between the two islands, with the vessel eventually becoming partially submerged in the sea. Eyewitnesses observed the ferry sitting dangerously low in the water, with only portions of its upper structure remaining visible above the waves as rescue efforts unfolded offshore.

The Coast Guard responded immediately upon receiving the distress call, dispatching a vessel to the scene. The official response, however, was not the only rescue effort mobilized. Several local fishermen in the area answered the emergency, redirecting their boats to assist in the evacuation and rescue of passengers and crew.

“I just left the hospital where I was updated that everyone from the ferry, Apple Syder is safe,” Prime Minister The Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew said following the incident. “Thanks to God, the emergency response teams, hospital staff, and civilians for their tremendous rescue efforts. More updates to follow.”

The Premier of Nevis, The Hon Mark Brantley, echoed expressions of gratitude for the coordinated rescue efforts. “My office has received news of an accident at sea involving one of our inter island ferries,” Brantley said. “At this point the information is that all passengers and crew are safe. We are grateful to our Coast Guard. We are grateful to God.”

As the damaged vessel, now partially submerged, was towed back toward shore, onlookers watched in relief as the rescue operation concluded successfully with all individuals accounted for and safe.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the emergency. Investigators are expected to provide further details following their assessment of the incident and examination of the vessel.
