BASSETERRE — Prime Minister The Hon. Dr. Terrence Drew used World Environment Day on Friday to reaffirm the government’s commitment to protecting the environment and advancing St. Kitts and Nevis’ Sustainable Island State Agenda, calling on citizens and residents to play their part in keeping the Federation green, clean, and sustainable.

In a message marking the annual observance, Dr. Drew pointed to government investments in renewable energy and water security as pillars of the administration’s long-term development vision, framing environmental stewardship as inseparable from national resilience.

“Today, on World Environment Day, I am reminded that the choices we make now will shape the St. Kitts and Nevis our children and grandchildren inherit,” Drew said. “From investing in renewable energy and water security to advancing our Sustainable Island State Agenda, we are working to build a nation that grows responsibly while protecting the beauty and resources that make our Federation unique.”

The prime minister emphasized that caring for the environment goes beyond preserving nature, describing it as a safeguard for future opportunities and national resilience.

“Protecting our environment is a responsibility to future generations. Every tree planted, every renewable energy project pursued, and every action taken to safeguard our natural resources is an investment in a stronger, more resilient nation,” he said. “Together, let us continue building a sustainable future for all.”

Dr. Drew’s remarks come as small island developing states like St. Kitts and Nevis face intensifying pressure from climate change, including rising sea levels, stronger hurricanes, and increasing water scarcity. His administration has identified the Sustainable Island State Agenda as a central framework for aligning economic development with environmental protection.

World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 and is the United Nations’ principal platform for raising awareness on pressing environmental issues. This year’s global theme focused on ecosystem restoration.
