BASSETERRE: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Marine Resources will host a week-long celebration for World Food Day, featuring events designed to honor local farmers, fishers, and food security initiatives across St. Kitts and Nevis.
Running from October 12-18, the celebration adopts this year’s global theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” and will showcase the partnerships and progress strengthening the nation’s food systems.
The week kicks off Sunday with a church service at Rivers of Living Waters at 9 AM, followed by a Fish Pot Making Workshop on Tuesday evening at Fig Tree Hard Court. Wednesday features hands-on Pineapple Production Training at Leon Anthony’s Farm in Cayon, offering farmers practical skills in crop cultivation.
Thursday’s highlight will be the Farmers & Fishers Prize Giving Ceremony at the CUNA Conference Center, recognizing outstanding contributions to agriculture and fisheries. The week continues Friday with the St. Christopher Outreach Luncheon and concludes Saturday with the SPACS Food Fair & Cook-Off at Sandy Point Hard Court.
“Let’s celebrate the hands that feed us—our farmers, fishers, and food heroes—as we work together for a stronger, healthier, and more resilient nation,” the Ministry stated in its announcement.
The events are open to the public and aim to raise awareness about food security while providing educational opportunities for those in the agricultural sector. World Food Day, observed annually on October 16, commemorates the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
